Whale Done – Review
There are very few books which leave an impact years after being read, and Whale Done – The Power of Positive Relationships is one of those few.
Written by self-help expert Ken Blanchard and his team, this wonderful book – like most of Blanchard’s other books, is a small tale which connects beautifully into what we face each day in our real life.
While books like Who moved my Cheese and The One Minute Manager are based on fables, Whale Done is based on something more relatable – the true story of Shamu the Whale. The opening statement of the book itself takes us into the psychology of Shamu and the other performers on the show, and through a story, Blanchard takes us behind the scenes and gets us to meet the trainers who work with these wonderful animals.
Like he always does, the author uses a story of a manager, who is having trouble at work, and gets her to interact with the trainers at the Whale Show on our behalf. Like always, the questions are extremely poignant and very valid for all supervisors and managers – all over the world.
Speaking through the trainers, the author gives us wonderful little snippets of wisdom, and by the time we complete the book, there is a lot of change in the way we perceive our teams. Like the name suggests, the book talks about using the power of Positive Relationships to better performance all around, and the good thing about this book – when compared to others in the genre – is that the suggestions are all do-able. But then, when we read Whale Done, we don’t feel like someone’s giving us suggestions, and we actually feel like reading a story. But by the time the protagonist starts implementing those thoughts into her daily schedule, we start forming plans to do the same at work the next day!
If you’ve not read the book, you certainly should! Buying a hardback would make sense as there will be a lot of readers you will want to pass this on. There is also an audio book available here in case you are more of the listening type.
